Prague: a Portrait in Black & White.

Back in March I grabbed a camera and headed off to spend Monday to Thursday shooting some travel photography, specifically street photography, in Prague. Never having been to the Czech Republic, I was really taken by the friendliness of the people and by the easy-going nature of its capital. So very different from the Prague of old that I’ve heard about.

The friendly and safe-feeling atmosphere is quite unlike that of any of the other capitals elsewhere that I have visited. The bad-tempered and crazed soundtrack was replaced by the gentle noises of the trams and Prague’s far more civilised streets. It did get crowded with tourists later in the day and in the evenings the stag-dos were definitely apparent. Somehow though the city seems to absorb much of that, particularly away from Old Town Square. I’m sure the summer is heavier going though (and no doubt less wet!).

After checking in to my small hotel quite late on the Sunday evening, I immediately set out in urgent search of food. I soon found myself almost audibly uttering the word “Wow!” over and over whilst walking across the bridge towards the old town. An uncontrolled reaction to the beautiful illuminated buildings and to the gentle clanking of the trams,

Street Photographs in Prague.

As ever, rather than just take photographs of the obvious tourist attractions, I aimed to create something of a portrait of the city and its people and to try and convey some of the city’s atmosphere. In trying to achieve that, it seemed that black & white better conveyed what I saw, heard and felt.

I could go on (and on), but really the purpose of this blog post is to show a few of the photographs that I took. I hope you enjoy them…
