With 40 years in the profession and with unceasing enthusiasm, let me inspire you to take great photographs and to really enjoy your photography on one of my photography courses.

No matter what level you’re at, please come and join my next photography course, ask me about organising your own small group of two or more, or ask me about One-to-One teaching.

The Photography Courses…

My photography lessons, courses and tuition are carefully and thoughtfully put together to make advancing in photography really enjoyable and effective. Because they are limited to small groups, each delegate receives plenty of personal guidance at whichever level is appropriate for them.

In addition to group courses, I also offer one-to-one (or your own small group) tuition and lessons tailored to your needs. For groups you can either get your own group together or join an existing course as individuals.

Whichever you choose, it’s all very friendly and enjoyable, with passionate teaching based on my love of photography and lifetime experience at professional level.

All experience levels very welcome.

I LEARNED SO MUCH!

Meeting John at a friends’ wedding, I was really impressed at his skill & professionalism but mainly by his amazing people skills. After a good conversation about photography I decided to book a course with him.

I was not disappointed. In the morning we covered a lot of technical stuff about the use of a camera and how to control the light.

In the afternoon we went out to Longshaw with our cameras and had a brilliant couple of hours taking pictures. I learned so much! More importantly, my enthusiasm’s been fired and I am getting enormous pleasure from this fascinating hobby.

What Does It Cost?

One-to-One Photography Lessons (for one or two people)

I charge £100.00 which covers the first two hours and £50.00 per hour thereafter. This covers either one or two people.

Join a Day Course

Photography courses generally take five to six hours and are very enjoyable and sociable. They are pre-organised by myself and available for individuals to join. I suggest five to six hours because learning is quite intense, but delegates have all absolutely loved it!

Numbers of delegates to each course are strictly limited to ensure that each person can receive plenty of attention.

Price £95.00 per person.  Please message me for dates of upcoming courses.

For Your Own Group of Three or More

A charge of £100.00 per person applies for between three and six people. For numbers above six a per-person discount would apply. This covers a day course of approximately six hours.

I’m more than happy to travel further afield from Derbyshire and Sheffield to accommodate your requirements. Naturally though, if we’re talking long distances or overnights I would ask you to cover additional costs incurred for this.

What Do The Photography Lessons Cover?

Understanding all the main technical elements of exposure, focus and composition are of course key and are the main foundations to work on. You might be surprised though by just how much else we cover as well. So much that you may not have really thought about.

A State of Mind

The biggest emphasis during the photography courses is on training our eyes, slowing down and looking more carefully at all the beauty that’s in front of us.

Here’s the biggest challenge to learn though: the ability to communicate what you see and even feel – through a photograph.

The contents of each course will vary according to need, but delegates will come away with a much greater understanding of the technical essentials, plus composition and light. All the aspects of photography that will enable you to understand and enjoy photography to a far greater degree will be an integral part of the tuition.

Where do the photography lessons take place?

Situated close to Sheffield, my outdoor courses for groups generally use Longshaw Lodge as an excellent base.

Tailored courses and lessons can take place at any location to suit you, including Longshaw. I recently did a One-to-One day at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. That was a great choice by the participant who wrote back to say what a  brilliant day he’d had.

WE HAD A MARVELLOUS DAY...

We had a marvellous day with John. He is very likeable and is happy to teach photography from basic to advanced.

We spent the morning looking at cameras, photographic techniques & how to make the best of a subject.

Then we went out to Longshaw and put the whole lot into practice. We captured landscapes, close ups, candid shots and even a red deer who fortunately passed our way.

The day was a complete success and has revived my passion for making pictures.

Thanks John!

Photography lessons for those less able….

If you aren’t able to go off into the hills or perhaps you wouldn’t feel comfortable in a group, then a One-to-One lesson could well be ideal for you. It would be completely tailored to you and I’m sure that you would enjoy and benefit greatly from the experience.

Street Photography Lessons and Tuition

In the city, or do you fancy a trip to the seaside?

The term street photography is more of a generalisation for people-watching photography.  If street photography is your thing, then I can offer tuition and thought provoking experience that can lift you to the next level.

Spend some time learning what to look for, to observe, watch, anticipate and capture. Disappear into a city and just watch or – my favourite – how about capturing the world at the seaside? Let me know what you fancy!

You can see some of my street photography on my Travel Photography Blog.

A bit about myself…

With commissions ranging from houses in the hills of Tuscany to landscapes in Maine and Vermont, my entire career has been in photography and photographic processing.

From English stately homes to industry in Sheffield, from the sheer joy of shooting around 500 weddings to working in a professional laboratory, I’ve covered a wide variety of photographic disciplines.

Spanning four generations, my family has been in photography and film-making since 1870, so photography is definitely in the genes.

See my About page for more information.
